Just to kick off an informal re-watch of LOM, in honour of Sunday night's broadcasts viewing at 9.00 pm. Late night people can start tonight, and we'll go through the week till the next epi broadcasts. prompts for discussion can be: things you liked best, favourite scene, song, dialog. Those who remember the era (and even those who regard it as history!), songs, clothes and the like. Catch you all later!! ;D ;D Attachments:

It was the schedule kindredspirit mentioned.Perhaps it's not a broadcast, she's just viewing on her DVD? you realise that it is exactly five years ago today since Life on Mars was aired for te very first time (still have the Radio Times with it in ) and plan to watch episode one series one at 9pm tonight. Also planning on re-watching an episide of Life on Mars each sunday night at 9pm until the first series is complete. Anyone care to join me? If you don't own a DVD, last I checked series 1 is uploaded on yt. Don't know if bits are missing, as I do own the DVD...A worthwhile investment to get both series, imho.

Sorry if I caused any confussion about a broadcast at 9pm tonight. Unfortunately Life on Mars WILL NOT be broadcast on tv. What I meant was that I would be starting a re-watch tonight at that time from my dvd boxset and chronologically watching series one on a sunday over the next eight weeks. Just wondered if anyone one here would like to join me and discuss each episode over the coming weeks. See you laters

Excellent imaof4. Thanks for the brilliant idea kindredspirit Let the fun begin! How long in before we get that lovely Simmy/Sam pout? OK. Pauses DVD on great still of Sam just after he has woken up in 1973. Why is this in 'Other Stuff' imaof4? No wonder it took me a while to spot it. ETA:- Great it's been moved - thanks jinxed. 'Tis pure Simm after all

;D I didn't know about the re-watch until now because my internet has been dodgy/down most of the day but co-incidentally we just happened to watch ep1 of series2 on virgin media 'More On Demand' this afternoon... (i do have the dvd -2 of LoM and all 3 of A2A tho i haven't re-watched s3 of A2A yet) - was feeling a bit poorly b4 lunch but food and a bit of Simmy goodness soon put me right and I did all the ironing whilst rewatching Torchwood COE eps 1-3. In case you're all wondering why i didn't watch more LoM, my sister and I are partway through a re-watch of series 1 so i will be seeing more on Tuesday evening with her hopefully.. although it was very tempting!

I hope you're feeling better now edzel2. I think a bit of Simmy therapy would have the same affect on me if I was feeling under the weather Only just finished watching. Too many stops and starts and replays of favourite parts. I always wonder how they managed to fit so much into one episode. I got diverted into downloading Baba O'Riley which I've been meaning to do for a while as I think it should have been on the soundtrack album. The opening titles for this episode are one of my favourites ever. The perspective of the shot of the cars driving along, the understated ominous incidental music and the graphics play together beautifully. The fact that they switch to the equally original and engaging main opening theme in episode two shows how much thought went into this series. I don't think people need to watch to comment. I suppose that there is a fair chance that quite a few know a lot of detail about the episodes via previous viewings!

'Tis pure Simm after all Picked this area 'cos I couldn't find the LOM area? Directionally challenged? Yes, it's pure Simm, challenge is to find where he's not in a scene (no complaints me!!!) Thought I'd move this to a more approriate section - hope you don't mind! I don't have my copy of S1 at the moment but I'll chip in ;D Quite forgot you're generously engaging in a long term loan of your DVD. Even when I've seen it umpteen times, I still get excited at a re-watch. *sigh, hopeless, I know!* Maya says to Sam "You used to believe in gut feeling, what happened?" he responds "Nothing" We don't have a prequel, but something's bothering our dear boy, relationship, job ("...what use are feelings in this room?") And in here lies our hero's quest, to find the answer. Definitely epic when Sam wakes up in 1973!! My diversion this evening is lesson planning for my tutorial students (after school). Good news, I've more students (more money!), but more prep. So gentle readers, I'll watch more, and possibly comment more during the week.

How right you are, Phyllis, about the opening sounds: the initial percussive note almost like a gunshot, then pulsating music mimicking the car wheels turning -- makes my tum do flipflops every time!
There is so much to admire in Ep. 1 One of the things I love is the economy of the scriptwriting/filming--when the action needs to flow for longer it does; when it can be foreshortened, then it shows precisely the bit that is necessary and no more. The rather slow unfolding of the Colin Raimes/Maya kidnap story transitions to the hit-and-run, and the moment at 7:14 takes one's breath away. I've told many friends, 'If it doesn't seem interesting at the start, just bear with the story until 7:14 and the minute or two afterwards, and you'll be hooked!'
We immediately start seeing things as Sam must have. When that first 1973 PC Plod appears he almost could be a Martian! The way the members of the team--including Annie--are introduced is great, as is the framing: sometimes one (Sam) surrounded by many (the rest of CID), sometimes two figures in profile (Gene and Sam, Sam and Chris), and the way foreground fades to show background and then back again.
Some of my favourite moments: (1) "Don't you start that sexy business with me, young man", (2) Sam pounding the TV set in frustration, and (3) the whole lovely scene with Mrs. Raimes. And Sam/Annie on the rooftop, of course. What do other people like best?
I first viewed Ep. 1 on TV here about a year ago, and when it ended I knew I HAD to see every episode no matter what (I often give up on multi-part series). Truly the beginning of something wonderful....

Am in complete agreement regarding the fantastic opening of LOM. Edmund Butt is a genius, and I wish he would publish his LOM music so I could buy it and listen to it again and again and again...

Yes, it's pure Simm, challenge is to find where he's not in a scene (no complaints me!!!) Almost 100% proof no doubt about that! No wonder I feel I could fall over after I've watched more than a couple of episodes. I think the part where Maya goes on about feelings is setting up a contrast against the story later as Sam starts to use gut feeling more in the situation he finds himself in. I agree very much about the scriptwriting/filming olenza. There isn't a moment wasted from the very beginning and yet it feels gripping but not rushed. Amazing. Some of my favourite moments are: Sam pelting after Raimes right at the beginning. The first pub scene where Sam says to Nelson "So. Which part of my subconscious do you hail from?" and then asks for a diet coke and gets stunned looks from Nelson and Gene. I love the pink wafers scene. It's the first time that Gene surprises Sam in that he knows how to be subtle sometimes. "Follow the Yellow Brick Road." The way the camera pans and the accompanying music. The CID set is just gorgeous and Sam's bedsit has a certain "Je ne sais quoit"

I love it when he gets a visit from the 'hypnotherapist' (Neil) - his reaction when Neil tells him that whatever he's experiencing isn't real... Gives me chills every time.
And crying and hugging the TV of course.
Perhaps most of all the first morning he wakes up to the sound of the milk man (or whatever it is, I forget) - 1973 seemed so incredibly real in that moment. It feels like we're waking up in reality with him, not in a dream-state. John is really good at waking up. That's not easy to do - I just watched the episode 'Wilson' of House with the commentary track. In one of the scenes we see Wilson wake up, and Robert Sean Leonard said it is one of the hardest things to do well - because it's so unnatural in that setting, I guess. RSL is great, though. (But John wakes up better.)

You can find the theme tune at the end of the lOM CD. I can't watch with you because I've lent my copy to my friend, Polly!
