Someone's posted an old interview, and this one's highly edited, unlike the original. John shares the lengths he went to stay afloat when he was a student. Awww!

OK, too much time on my hands, and after more than a week off - I'm sure I'll have work tomorrow. Been checking my youtube playlist (sadly, not a lot of new vids on JS). Some that I really liked have been pulled :'(.

This is one I picked up in January.

Oh bless you, jinxed! This is indeed the stuff. I'll check it out later and see if anything's been left out. Awesome! :-)

Edit: Upon closer inspection, there are a couple of things I saw in the original programme that they didn't include in this clip - David's praise of John's acting and John's comment on how lonely the Doctor is. If anyone finds the whole programme somewhere (BBC America David Tennant special), let us know!

That program seems to be unbelievably elusive! The link now says it has expired!

Found it. PM me for links. (I'm getting paranoid -each time someone posts the link for it, it mysteriously disappears!)

It's a great vid. I like when John says he never wanted to play the Doctor because he's drawn to the dark side, and the comparison between Cain and Abel, "Am I my brother's keeper?"

I love when he says that the Doctor is alone, and when he mimics the drumbeat and says "all the time, ALL the time." (Let's face it - every bit is my favourite bit...) He repeats himself a lot, which I find endearing. I did feel a bit uncomfortable watching this interview, though, more so than usual. Or perhaps on the same level as during the BBC Breakfast Elling interview. John's emotions are always so clear, and I tend to be overly sensitive to other people's emotions, so I'm pretty sure he wasn't feeling too comfortable either.

He reminds me of a wild animal. Takes a while for him to trust others and he's shy when he encounters people, but he's far from harmless, if you know what I mean. He can pull out madness, anger, wildness and all that stuff too.

The Cain and Abel reference is interesting -John makes quite a few biblical references. He compared the Doctor with Jesus in TEOT commentary, and I think it speaks volumes of his character how he made sure to let everyone know he meant no offense by his comment. Maybe he was just being considerate towards David? :-)

It moves me when John cares so much about not offending or hurting others. Seems to me he doesn't think of the public as an irrelevant, faceless mass of people, but as individuals that matter. Just reading about his specific encounters with people and how much of an impact they have on him... it's very revealing.

John Simm: The heart of a lion, and the softness of a house cat... Great qualities in any man, I'd say.

UTD, re. the BBC breakfast interview. I was scouting around on line, watched the Elling interview and then later chanced on a newspaper article where the interviewer said that John appeared to be not in the best of moods. In the article John moaned a little about how he had just done the BBC interview that morning and that they had latched onto his comments about fan mail and being famous.

Apologies if this observation has been made as I haven't read the whole thread yet and am just reacting to your post. But it shows that you are right and that he really was NOT happy during that BBC interview.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/3667013/The-man-who-fell-to-earth.html

"Simm had arrived to meet me half an hour late, with the swaggering gait of a Gallagher and a face like thunder, looking less cheeky chappy, more ageing street urchin (he is now 37). So far, so tricky. He has a reputation as a difficult interviewee: moody, taciturn. But he turns out to be quite the opposite. It’s surprising how quiet his voice is, and how nervous he sounds at the beginning. The swagger, you sense, is bravado. The black cloud floating above his head is arguably easier to pinpoint: the result of a BBC Breakfast interview he'd done earlier in the day.

'We were interviewed on stage, and the guy was like, "You don’t like fan mail, do you? And you don’t like that red carpet thing? And you’re shy?" And I was like, "yeah, yeah, yeah." And the interview became about me not liking being famous – and it was supposed to be about the play. And so now people think I’m a moaning old b*****d! It’s just I'm not great with banks of photographers and sound bites.' "

Poor John :(

Phyllis, yes, I've read that interview too. I think I've read every interview he's ever given... How sad am I...

It's weird. Usually when I've liked an actor in the past, I only need to read a few articles about him to find out he's really not that interesting a person. I'm not sure what it is with John, but everything he says makes me like him more. It might be his unflinching honesty, integrity, eagerness to please coupled with an unwillingness to compromise his values... he's a bit of an enigma. He seems to have a very rich inner life, something I'm always drawn to in a man. :-) He tries to be very private, and stay out of the tabloids etc, and yet I think he reveals more about who he really is than most celebrities do.

Well put UTD. I think the very characteristics you list mean that anything he does reveal about himself does give a greater insight into who he is.

And if it helps at all, doing interviews is part of his job, and we all have parts of our job we hate. Not to say it should be easy for him, just means it's the same for him as the rest of us. :-/

Talking about how John comes across in interviews - apparently some are not as understanding as us. I found this theatre blog which is decidedly nasty. Warning - reading it will make you angry... >:(

Jinxed, it actually made me laugh!

"Andrew was particularly incensed by this bit as falling asleep is his forte and if he’s paid for a seat he feels pretty entitled to do what he likes with it."

...and love John all the more. :-*. Old people can be annoying, but I think that they have earned the right to sit in the front row (need to see, hear etc) and fall asleep if they want to. ;D I agree with UTD. I think John reveals more about himself than a lot of actors and that is what makes him so endearing. I also find every interview about him that I read fascinating. That Evening Standard one is a good one.
