I think the way their polls are set up is all wrong, personally. Wouldn't it be much fairer if it were done this way:
London/West End: Best Musical (Sub Categories of best actor, actress, set design, etc) Best Drama (Sub Categories of best actor, actress, set design, etc) etc
Touring Productions: Best Musical (Sub Categories of best actor, actress, set design, etc) Best Drama (Sub Categories of best actor, actress, set design, etc) etc
Regional : Best Musical (Sub Categories of best actor, actress, set design, etc) Best Drama (Sub Categories of best actor, actress, set design, etc) etc
and with a separate section for:
Best Shakespeare - Regional (best actor, actress etc) Best Shakespeare - London/West End Best Shakespeare - Touring
What do the more regular theatre-goers amongst us think? It seems to me to be very unfair that (for instance) John in a regional production should have to compete with another artist in a West End or even a Touring Show - to reflect true popularity you'd have to work out the market share of audiences based on length of production, venue size, etc etc. This way, each section is only competing against its own peer group. Much fairer I think! Of course, this award is based on people actually bothering to vote, not ticket sales. Is there any market research/award given for sales figures, does anyone know?
And also, all this doesn't alter the fact that to come second with a production which had such a short run is rather impressive - or so it seems to me. Because five weeks is short, isn't it? Is it unusually so?) and in a relatively small venue (can't remember the seating figure now but wasn't it somewhere around one thousand?) I think they should feel chuffed with that!

It is basicly a West End with a nod to the rest of London poll. Unfortunately as we've noted before, critics don't move out of London unless they have to. There's a very narrow vision generally for theatre, which is a shame because for a start London theatre seats cost double what you can pay elsewhere.
With only one category for regional "Hamlet" did incredibly well. When you consider that the RSC in Stratford didn't even get a mention and they had some excellent performances last year (and it's not just me saying this - the critics agreed too).
I think five weeks for a regional production is fairly standard. Somewhere like the Crucible would expect to put on a variety of performances over the year, catering for all tastes and wouldn't therefore be able to justify a run of three months, which is more common in the West End.

I read somewhere that Hamlet sold in excess of 30,000 tickets - some of them to very far flung places and lots of new customers. I'm sure they'd have John back there doing whatever he wanted in a heartbeat. Fingers crossed

I guess part of my point was that it's more inclusive if we don't use too many abbreviations... Oh well. I do know about the urban dictionary, was just too lazy to use it this time.
