Ok, so I guess this JS drought is becoming more than apparent, since I consider the following worthy of a post, but I'm always happy to read or hear people praise John. Here's a quote from director Paul Marcus from the book We Could Possibly Comment - Ian Richardson Remembered by Sharon Mail:
"I worked with Ian again in 2003 on Imperium: Nero, which was filmed in Tunisia. He played an elderly senator and gave a marvellous performance, which I likened to that of Edward Heath in his old age. (...) John Simm played Caligula and Ian knew of him as a working class contemporary actor and was so admiring of his received pronunciation and the intelligence he brought to his role."

I'm so glad you commented before I did, as you would be much more attuned and knowledgeable. My initial reaction, when I read the quote, was that it seemed a somewhat left handed compliment - "Good show old boy, you can manage the classics, and in the proper accent".
But then again, from another perspective, it could be a compliment of the highest regard, because an actor has to be versatile to portray characters of divergent circumstances, rank and class. Our boy will be playing the King of Denmark, and his voice should reflect that.
When circumstances demand he play "contemporary" roles, he does it in spades. And I so love his voice in those. Nick's voice, in SIT comes to mind, as he despairs that his wife wasn't even up waiting for him, worrying about him after his late night and misadventure with Valerie...
And yes, John does bring intelligence to the role - all of them.
