Am I right in thinking that you can't surf the internet or post on forums and read emails on a Kindle? I'm trying to talk myself out of succumbing to either a Kindle or an iPad... I use my iPhone a lot for surfing and emailing and reading fic when I'm not at my computer (which is itself a laptop but not a very light or portable one TBH) but the tiny screen does my eyes in very quickly I find; after just half an hour reading a tiny screen I can't watch TV for ages afterwards because my focus is messed up!! Something light but with a bigger screen than an iPhone would suit me to the ground...

Just been discussing it with the OH. He says that there is some limited browsing ability but it doesn't sound as if it's designed for posting on forums as you say. Sounds like it would be great for storing and reading fan fic docs though (Only if password protected I think just in case children are tempted to have a play). Sounds like you may be veering more towards an iPad though. Can you post on forums with an iPad?

The Kindle is basically a book, and not for surfing. The iPad works for most internet stuff, I believe. Haven't tried it though.

I purchased the Kindle soe I can pull the fics and create text docs (or PDFs) and download them to the Kindle. I can surf the Web and I should be able to get to my email. I'll try to post using it. Not sure about that. It is black-and-white only, but for the price (here it's $139, w 3G it's $189 which is what I bought) I couldn't resist.

I can sit at a PC for only so long. I'd rather be able to take my reading wherever I want (such as the waiting room when I took Jip the cat for a routine exam at the vet's! Had to make sure prying eyes couldn't read some of the fic I've downloaded ;)).

I wish I could visit the local market and pick up all of the Simm coverage. I have to wait until some kind soul posts it or I find it on the Web. :(

Never tried downloading fanfic - PP can it be as a word document or just PDF files?
They're great for downloading the classics as they are free ;D Normal new books also tend to be cheaper tha the paper version. I found the daily paper as waste as it cost 75p and wasn't as easy to scan as a normal newspaper. I didn't realise you could scan the net on it though ???

I've been searching for LoM, Master, SoP, etc. fanfic and then organizing it by author. I figured this would a good way to reduce the chances of downloading the same fics from different forums.

I create a Word doc and then copy and paste the articles. I don't worry about formatting because most of that is lost when it goes to the Kindle. Underlines stay for some reason, but point sizes, bolds, margins don't. Anyhoo, when I think I've found all of an author's works (to date), I save the file as a plain text file. I can then download it to my Simmfic folder on the Kindle via USB (there are other ways to download but this is the simplest). If I happen to pull the comments or other info I may not need, it doesn't matter because you can just page right through it. It's not like it makes the Kindle heavier :)

I know I've barely scratched the fanfic surface, but half of the fun is in the search, or so I like to tell myself!

Thanks for the info, ladies! Still undecided, I think it may come down to cost... Saw a feature on ITV this morning about a family who put away all their digital technology for six months - *shrieks in horror* I'd be lost without my gadgets!!

edzel2 have you thought of getting a cheap pair of glasses specificially for reading your iphone? It wouldn't be worth it for just sending the odd text (or for making a phone call ;)) but if you're using it for half an hour then it could be worthwhile (and cheaper than buying a Kindle/ipad).

Good idea SH - I watch some stuff on an ipod nano which is quite a small screen so I use the reading glasses that you can get in tesco and the like. It's suprising what a difference it makes ;D

Thank you for the thought, SmallHobbit and Jinxed - I wear prescription specs all the time and weirdly find the tiny screen easier to read if I take them off!! Have we any optomerists (I think that's the right word!?) among us who can explain that?!? LOL I've got one of those flexible magnifying sheet things (find it essential for reading DWM!) but it's a bit off a faff TBH... Can't you just sense that this has more to do with 'want' than it does with 'need'...?!? ;D

Hey, edzel2, I'd never have guessed!

I use reading glasses for computer screen/reading and distance glasses elsewhere and find that apart from the "Mother, you've got the wrong glasses on" (kids, who'd have 'em) they work fine. I've recently persuaded OH to get reading glasses (he uses varifocals) and he's amazed at the improvement (only taken me two years!)

I've only just started lifting up my (distance) glasses in order to read fine print sometimes :(. I didn't mention this to the optician the last time I had my eyes checked.

Aha! Signs that others on this forum are entering the magical age of reverse myopia!

Seeing that this thread has come to the fore again, I thought I'd add my own "you know you're a fan... when":

... you "retire" the pen he used to sign your Hamlet programme, and keep it where you can look at it every day to re-live the memory! :o

My silver Sharpie (used for exactly the same thing) is in my everyday bag for some strange reason - I don't think I've actually used it since, nor have I dusted it for fingerprints... but it gives me a nice fuzzy feeling every time I come across it as I rummage...!
