I think both versions are good, Heather, but I preferred the photos and colours on the previous version. This is just a suggestion, so please feel free to disregard, but how about keeping the previous design except for making the text boxes light-coloured with dark text? Dark text on a lighter background is easier on the eyes, and this solution may be a good compromise and keep those complainers off your back. Well, anyway, just a suggestion. You're doing a great job! 
Oh, and keep in mind you can't please everyone. Make sure you like it yourself, that's what counts in the end.

I see white text on grey - my preference would be black on grey, but it's still readable. The gallery looks lovely. Point of fact, I'm more interested in content than form, so I'm easily pleased, 'cos you're site is aces on content!!
