I may torture myself and watch another US episode tonight – and likely feel compelled to give a ranting review here.

The last episode I watched was the American version of the Warrens’ episode. They changed the story a little. Rather than Sam trying to give her the money that was slipped into his pocket, they decided she had taken a job at Warren’s. You know, turning tricks, because that would be so edgy, right? I didn’t like it, but I guess it worked. Fine, whatever, but they also change Ruth Tyler’s name.

(Wait for it)

They changed it to Rose Tyler.

Really, Hollywood? Was that supposed to be an homage? Was that really necessary!? Now, I know a lot of us in the States wouldn’t get the reference about getting pills from Doctor Who, but…Well, let it go.

I imagine things are changed sometimes to make them more relevant to the average viewer in the US. Other times, you have to sanitize things for the American audience or dumb down the humour. I’m not saying I agree with it, but that’s my guess. But yeah, we should have left it alone. The US cannot improve upon everything. Nor should we.

(Disclaimer on my spelling of humour: Although I’m from the US, it’s always looked wrong to me without the second “u” and I’m going to let it stand!)

The name change is beyond hilarious, especially since the character of Sam Tyler is actually named after Rose Tyler in the first place. :)

snorkie - you deserve a medal - I'd be throwing things at the telly. I did watch the last 10 minutes of the US version and spent it with my mouth open muttering What?? What?? The most ridiculous 10 minutes of television ever ::)

What comes to mind, and I am expressing my own prejudice here, "you're a better man than me Ginga Din." I had determined to give this US version the swerve from the get go. So I disqualify myself from direct compare and contrast discussions, but do reserve the right to cringe at the idea of makeovers in general and bizarre plot twists shared. I read that last bit of the article - omg (and not in a good way)! :o

I'm almost disappointed that the 5th episode did not suck as much as the others. While they did throw in some elements from the real LoM, they managed to be a bit original.

I seem to remember reading that the series improved when they used original material, rather than trying to convert something that was essentially very English and based within our 1970s culture. And I think it's not just a question of changing 1970s Manchester to 1970s New York. Life on Mars is 2006 Sam reacting to 1973 life, so almost a dual perspective. Whilst the larger issues would be the same wherever (health, ability to work, racism etc) the way LoM shows them is very specific to their context. Change the context and you need different ways to show the same thing.

Excellent points smallhobbit about context.

I did watch bits and pieces of the Spanish LOM, and they changed the year to 1978, to include issues of the Franco government. The original LOM didn't hit you over the head with political overtones, but they were there nonetheless.

I subjected myself to another episode this morning. I must have a masochistic streak. This may have been the worst one yet.

This one was based on the S1E6, the hostage episode. Instead of a newspaper, it was set in a hospital psych ward and the hostage-taker was the brother of one of the patients, not an employee. He was going to blow the place up if his demands weren't met. It just got worse from there. No tension, other than me pushing through to watch it all and longing for the end to come. And of course, we had to have a body count, so they shot the hostage-taker.

:o (and not in a good way at all)

If they'd done that at the beginning they could have saved you a lot of time ;)

Don't want to dissuade you on your masochistic streak there snorkie, but nothing you've shared has shifted me from my original position.

Didn't think I'd be changing any minds! ;D More like doing the service of letting folks know what they're not missing. If I'm going to subject myself to this travesty, I feel compelled to let others know as a warning. If I can stop just one person from watching it, it'll be worth it...or something like that.

I've just watched the trailer for the first time and thought it was a bad joke. It not only lacks the core actors but lacks soul, plain and simple.

I thoight it would be bad but not that bad...

I actually watched (some) of La Chica de Ayer (mostly to have a laugh at my Spanish comprehension). It was reformatted somewhat to suit the post- Franco era Spain, with a most respected Argentinian actor, Ernesto Alterio, as Samuel Santos...

Still, if you've the original...

But nothing will come close to the real LOM.
