Wow, just WOW.

Weren't we all saying not too long ago that we'd love to see John tackling some Shakespearian roles now that he's maturing both as an actor and as a man? Hamlet is most definitely right up his alley: angsty, conflicted, and emotional, yet also possessing a mind like a steel trap and a wit sharper than Edward Sexby's best sword. It's the sort of role that John was born to play, I think, and he'll pull it off brilliantly.

Now it's time for me to put in some serious overtime at work so I can afford to jet over to London to see this marvelous man in action for myself. ;)

The RSC already have their programme until next September (yes, I have my tickets) and would John want to be away from his family in Stratford. Jude Law did Hamlet as part of Donmar West End at Wyndhams Theatre.

Hamlet, together with Julius Caesar, has to be one of my favourite Shakespeare plays. Now if only he would play Brutus ...

I'm looking forward to the TV version too - I saw the RSC when Edward Bennett was Hamlet (I did say I like the play ;D)

He'd make an excellent Brutus or Cassius, in my opinion. It's too bad that he's now about fifteen or twenty years too old to play Romeo, though; that's a part that he would easily have pulled off when he was younger!

Then again, he could also do some of the comedies. The Taming of the Shrew (his Petruchio would be interesting), The Merchant of Venice (given his experience with the Master, I think Shylock would be a walk in the park for him), and Twelfth Night (either Count Orsino or possibly even Sir Toby or Malvolio, depending on how much he wanted to chew the scenery) are three of my favourites, and John definitely has the chops to do Shakespearian comedy justice.

It's generally done on stage. I think he would have specified if it was a film or a TV adaptation. I know David Tennant's Hamlet's on TV at Christmas. It will be brilliant to compare the two. I don't know the play at all so this'll be a good starting point.

Teachable moment, if you're not familiar with the play, nothing like the present to catch up. Done very well, by a little known playwright... ::)

Question I have is, why Hamlet? Don't get me wrong - a terrific venue and it's certainly "a hoop through which every eminent actor must, sooner or later, jump"
Max Beerbohm 1889) , but I would have thought to choose a different play precisely because DT has done it so recently and coming out this Christmas.

I've been staring at this computer far too much today - I thought you's written 'where all the best mooning is'

Wishful thinking....

Very nautical of you jinxed! :D

I love Hamlet. I know it's usually performed on stage, but I've only seen film adaptations myself. Would be great to see it on stage as it was intended. Especially with such a fine actor in the title role. :-)

Wouldn't mind meeting up with fellow JS fans in London if he is doing theatre at that time
