I too thought that it was an odd clip to show, Unturndownable. I thought perhaps they might go for an early scene so as not to spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it yet and who might be inspired by the nomination to do so... but no, the clip they used pretty much gave away the plot so why not use that hugely powerful scene where Tom is watching the video on his laptop... that would have been far better to display John's talent and prove him worthy of the gong IMHO. I think the expression 'Meh' fits quite well at this point....
I haven't seen 'Appropriate Adult' either... my OH watched the BAFTA's with me (despite saying that he wouldn't...LOL) and said he would like to see it.
I do wonder if perhaps there should be a distinct category for 'Drama based on real events' as opposed to 'Original Drama' - Darra made a very pointed comment at the end, I thought, with which I tend to agree - I can't quote him exactly but basically he was congratulating the winners and saying to the rest of the nominees that they shouldn't worry too much because "it's all political..." and indeed I did have the feeling right from when I first read the list of nominees that 'Appropriate Adult' would win because of the 'worthy' subject matter may have swung the balance...
In case anyone might think that I'm saying Altzheimer's isn't worthy, obviously it is - but that wasn't really what 'Exile' or John's performance was about, was it, or what the award (IMO) should (again IMO) be about... and this is not in any way meant to belittle Dominic West or any of the other AA cast performances either, which I am sure were excellent. Also I don't doubt Dominic's genuine feelings on the matter. I just feel that perhaps original drama and drama based on true events should really have separate categories. I know it would make the Awards Ceremony that much longer, but I do think it might be fairer....
At the end of the day there can only be one winner of course, and I do think that even being nominated is recognition of a sort... but John's time will come, I'm quite sure.

Came to commiserate and cry in my beer!
Don't want to take anything away from Dominic. Weeell, I guess I do, as there is only one BAFTA awarded in the category of Leading Actor. Definitely was Appropriate Adult's night.
*His sister should have been rooting for John?*
Thanks for the couple piccie PP - they both look fantastic. The BAFTA is on iplayer btw.

I love Sherlock, I really do but I think John was better. I hate those "Benedict should have won" panic from hardcore fans without even seeing the rest of the nominees. I understand that John doesnīt appeal young teen girls so much and Sherlock is great and Benedict is great but...he has a style how he plays him. He established a style and to tell 100 words per minute isnīt a proof of a best actor. John showed a big range of emotions in The Exile but I think people just prefer more likeable characters than those "dicks" John tends to choose to play. He is likeable in his own way but the character has more shades of grey. I havenīt seen Dominic West in Appropriate Adult so I will keep my opinions about him in there. I only saw him in Mona Lisa Smile and always thought he "turned on" his charm to win over the audience *shrugs*

I agree with you on Sherlock and I've seen BC give better performances in other stuff, which wouldn't have the appeal that Sherlock has (which I absolutely love btw ). His Frankenstein was fabulous. Dominic West certainly didn't play 'charming' in this role - far from it, and with the dreadful fake teeth, awful hair and clothes, he wasn't going for the female vote! I remember the Cromwell Road murders and seeing photos of Fred West in the paper, and wondering how he was so alluring to women. I think DW captured some of that appeal in this production and gave an excellent range of characteristics to what can only be called a monster. Definitely worth a watch if you can - you don't see any murders or anything gruesome so don't let the subject matter put you off. Still think John should have won it on the laptop scene alone...

Thanks, imaof4!
And your reward:
He looks absolutely gorgeous! But I burst out laughing at John's expression, and delayed applause. I'd be a little PO'd if I were nominated for best actor and didn't make the clip package (thank dog that Robert Vaughn did ).
This occurred at 08:51. Anyone know if John appears again (other than the best actor announcement, of course)?

He had the same reaction few years ago when he lost for Life on Mars (if I am not mistaken, it was, ironically, Joel Broadbent?). I like it. Itīs an honest reaction. No "yeah, absolutely, I wanted him to win anyway" but "I am disappointed because I did a great job and wanted to be rewarded for it". The clips they have chosen didnīt really show any of acting skills of any of them. I agree that the laptop scene, spoilerish as it is, would be a better example.

PP - JS appears briefly just after the very first highlights of the year video, about 8 minutes in. Thanks for these gorgeous screencaps! When I watched it I thought it was amazing how out of place he looked. Like he wanted to be miles away.

That's where these particular screencaps are from. Yes, he does look like he'd rather be anywhere else ... perhaps the Crucible Corner, hoisting a few.

On a shallow note, he looks great, as always
Here's a radio interview in which John sets the record straight about his feelings as to who won what at the '07 Baftas:

Thanks for my reward PP. And the radio interview!!
They do do that sorta thing at awards don't they? a kinda 'gotcha' moments of the other nominees that didn't win. In all honesty, I feel it's fair and just to have and show disappointment whilst applauding the winner.
John tweeted on 28 May: John Simm @john_simm 'Congrats to all winners this wkend, especially my dear and brilliant friend Dom West (and TIE '88!) #baftas Englebert wuz robbed tho! #euro'
Er, um, loyalty aside, I was never too enthused about Engelbert...still, it was an devastating loss.
John's responding to fans who've seen Betrayal, which is quite lovely.
Do want to be clear - absolutely love Sherlock and Bennedict (and Martin! )!! Appropriate Adult was riveting.Yes, Dominic was brilliant, but Emma was really outstanding as the linchpin, imho, to the whole broadcast. TBH, I prefer This is England more than This is England '88, but certainly appreciate Joe's established character.
Can I tease out of all this that John should have been the clear winner? On honest reflection, I'd have to say a resounding yes.
