I think that's great news. Yes, it is tough competition indeed.

He's a key witness. So could you treat him like a person, Phyllis. D'you remember "people"? You used to be one!

At the moment Benedict Cumberbatch is in the lead on the Radio Times 'Who Should Win' poll - let's help redress the balance!

If there's any justice, John should get the BAFTA. That is not to disparage his esteemed colleagues... just where my heart and mind is.

Everyone's miles behind Benedict Cumberbatch in the RT pol. ::)

Yes, you are quite right there UTD - everyone nominated is deserving, as are the thousands more who weren't. Both 'Exile' and 'Appropriate Adult' dealt with uncomfortable subject matter, whereas 'Sherlock' was just out and out great entertainment. But it would be SO nice to see John win something for this role...

Who actually decides the winners with the BAFTA's? Come to that, who decides who the nominees are? I imagine it's a panel of BATFTA people...?

I believe it's May 27th.

Actually, what set John's performance apart from (and above, I believe) the others is that his character changes and grows during the course of the drama. I hope BAFTA recognizes his skill and gives him the award, though it would be an unexpected choice. As Paul Abbott said, "People don't realize that what he does is so good: that what he does is invisible. You look at his work and it's extraordinary."

Hmm,still one month to wait then.
Some people comment Joseph Gilgun may win in that category in lj.
I wonder whether JS will attend the award?

Here's to hoping that John does get the BAFTA. It would be wonderul if he did win especially when he is in the middle of doing theatre.

re: 2shy - I wonder if JS will attend the award?
Yes, I've been wondering about that too. Especially as I will be going to see the evening performance of Betrayal on the 26 May, the evening before...

What night of the week is the award show? If there is a performance then I would say not. If it's a Sunday, then perhaps he might....

BAFTA are scheduled for Sunday, 27 May: http://www.bafta.org/television/awards/nominees-winner-2012,3256,BA.html

Here's a plan, rather than travel from Sheffield, John will just accept his award from a comfortable spot in The Crucible Theatre, and then announce his return as the Master.

*Um, sorry, mixing it up with some else accepting an award and making an announcement about DW! :D*
