A teacher's strike I experienced personally was when I was in primary school.Teachers were out 36 days! I wasn't at all aware just how long at the time, tbh.My mother worked, so I stayed at friends where mums were home or my grandparents.

Being a teacher now, I guess my leanings would be to side with my fellow teachers, as well as others that work in the public sector. If collective bargaining and (contractual) agreements that developed the pension scheme to begin with can be changed at will, where does it lead?

Don't pretend to know the answers, and yes, I can see both sides as well.

Clarkson is totally besides the point, and so are arguments over his remarks He's a known quantity, acerbic and rude. His apology was qualified 'if offence had been caused'. (emphasis mine). I take no offence, but still find no humour in his jokes.

I'm with you UTD,' Hugs and drinks all round! :)' sounds a fantastic idea!! Barman, make mine a glass of chardonnay, and don't skimp on those hugs now!! ;)

Jeremy Clarkson ::) I think it was his idea of a joke, albeit not a very funny one. Also, and I'm not trying to excuse him in any way, he said he was trying to be 'balanced' in his comments, after just praising the strike for emptying the roads! Complete idiot and past his sell by date I think.
OK Sam I definitely need a drink at the moment - I just want to sleep for a week please :)

Phew! 36 days - that's a long time imaof4. I guess I should count my blessings and try to be more understanding. In these tough financial times a lot of contracts have been broken and what were presumed to be solid foundations, e.g. banks, have crumbled. This is a biased point of view from a probably very well paid superhead and I don't agree with everything he says.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/education/892....the-strike.html

It's that time of year I guess. Too much to do and fit in with all the Christmas events and preparations and now the weather has finally turned cold and windy with snow threatening.

Hope you manage to get some more sleep soon jinxed.

What a very strange week it's been... all the hoo-hah over what Clarkson said seems to me to be mainly a case of the media hyping up what was a bit of a storm in a teacup (IMO)... he is well known for his outragous and shocking comments - it was all rather facetious as far as I can see (and I did see the whole clip, in context), the definitoin of which is:

1. characterized by levity of attitude and love of joking a facetious person
2. jocular or amusing, esp at inappropriate times facetious remarks
[from Old French facetieux, from facetie witty saying; see facetiae]
facetiously adv
facetiousness n

Now obviously many folk didn't find what he said particularly amusing but I think the point is that he thought it was, and it was in direct opposition to what he'd said a moment before, which was that he thought the strike was 'brilliant because the streets are empty' which meant he could drive through London at speed rather than sit in a traffic jam as he normally does. (For those who don't know, he is a bit of a 'petrol head' ie likes to drive his cars fast). When the interviewer said 'lets have a bit of balance' he then came out with the reark about how terrible the strike was and how they "should all be shot dead in front of their families' - obviously he didn't really think that and obviously it was - if in rather poor taste- intended purely as a humourous and extreme opposite point of view to what he'd said a moment ago... He often says provocatively outrageous things so I'm not sure why the media were surprised....!

The media love to make a fuss about 'celebreties' who say shocking and/or stupid things and this seems to me to be much of the same, really... ;D

Hope you manage to catch up on your sleep Jinxed, and I'm sorry to hear that you're not having a great time either Phyllis.

Thank you too for all your kind words in relation to my bereavement. Still quite hard to take in that he's gone...

Good news to hear that you now have a ticket for the play, Iamo4 - here's hoping that you can work out the rest of the arrangements in due course!

In this really busy time before Christmas, (and I'm speaking for myself as well!), I hope everyone can manage to do good things for themselves - like getting much needed rest ...*virtual hug to jinxed*

I certainly hope the decision to strike was considered as a last resort and teachers aren't taking 'jolly days' during days out!! ???

What this most recent financial crisis has emphasised to us all, there are no guarantees or absolutes.

Since 2009, I've had teaching contracts (in both private and state-funded schools) not renewed, been unemployed twice (the last bout was for 14 months, tho' did substitute teach for 5 months of that time). My present position has teachers with no increment increase in salary the past 4 years and we are required to pay more into our pension plan. No striking going on here.

It is important to note that this hasn't been the first nor will it be the last financial crisis. There are good times, and bad times, and the latter is never, ever easy.

This is just how my mind works, and I need to inject humour... One of my favourite comedians, Tommy Tiernan.

'Good news to hear that you now have a ticket for the play, Iamo4 - here's hoping that you can work out the rest of the arrangements in due course!' Thanks edzel2, and I will live in hope and put best effort forward! ;D

There's some rough and ready humour in that clip imaof4 ;D It's good to be reminded to stop taking things so seriously for a while.

Hope everyone is having a good weekend. The promised snow hasn't arrived yet. I'm counting this as a good thing although my son feels somewhat differently about it.

Yeah, Tommy does have a want to go a wee overboard ::)...of course I was attempting to draw everyone's attention to his pithy remarks about good/bad times.

Weekend's been alright, and snow or no, I'm taking a 'snow day' tomorrow.*shhh, you're all sworn to secrecy!! ;)* My wicked plan is to catch up on work related stuff that simply has to be done. This week I've three meetings (two after school). I'm determined to have no assessment artifacts, unit or lesson planning to do until after the New Year. I'll be traveling to see my mum over the break, and would be sorry company if I bring work with me!!

I know imaof4, I just couldn't resist a tease regarding the bit about Angelina Joli and at the end of the clip. ;)

Please don't introduce our Public Sector workers to the concept of Snow Days. The way the weather has been going in the UK in recent years...[slaps own wrist - better yet gets Sam to slap it for me :P]

For those of us who spend waaaaay too much time in front of the 'pooter...

Type a google search: let it snow. Wait a bit.

Might not be as much fun for those with too much of the white stuff, but if you don't, have fun playing! ;D

Yesterday I could've gone outside and played in some REAL snow (as could anybody in parts of Scotland and perhaps elsewhere, I understand)... but it was only about half an inch and today it's melting.

Hoping for a massive storm 3 January to extend the Christmas break... Never happens that way, but still can dream! :)

Know this is a tad over Sam's present time line (ok, 6 years past '73 ::)), but I couldn't resist it. I've renamed the song Simm-ply Having a Wonderful Christmastime btw! (I know, incorrigible. :D)

Consider it my card to the forum...Drinks all 'round!
